Over the past few years, Melanson has lobbied to attract medical doctors in the area and has been a strong supporter of the newly constructed municipal Clare Health Centre, as well as voicing his support regarding local nursing homes that require expansions to their facilities, to meet the needs of the aging population of Clare.
Warden Melanson is a strong supporter of library and literacy services for the Acadian community and is known for his work in this field at the local level as well as provincially. Melanson has represented the District of Clare on the Western Counties Regional Library Board since 1982 and also held the position of Chairman for a few years. He also served on a committee of the Provincial Library that spearheaded an initiative to secure Federal funding to support the delivery of French language services at libraries serving Acadian communities across the province of Nova Scotia.
Melanson was awarded the Library Association of Nova Scotia Merit Award in 2004 for his outstanding leadership in the advancement of public library trusteeship and public library service in Nova Scotia.
Warden Melanson also took on the role of President of the Fédération acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse (FANE) for two years, lobbying for the rights of Acadians in the province of Nova Scotia.
When not attending events and functions as Warden, Jean Melanson also represents the Municipality of Clare on numerous committees and boards, such as the Interpretative Cultural Centre Advisory Board, Western Region Solid Waste-Resource Management Authority, Harbourside and Tidal View Board of Directors, and the Clare Energy Concept Committee.
Also, currently sits on the Board of Directors at Université Sainte-Anne, the only French language university in Nova Scotia.
Jean Melanson was a school teacher at the Hebron Elementary School in Yarmouth County for almost 30 years, primarily focusing on science and geology. In the later stages of his teaching career, he became the Principal of Hebron Elementary and then Vice-Principal, until his retirement in 1996.
Jean Melanson was also an entrepreneur for a period of time, running a renowned restaurant next to Mavillette Beach Provincial Park.
Warden Melanson is a graduate of Université Sainte-Anne, Church Point. He resides in the village of Salmon River (near Yarmouth) with his wife, Beverley, and has three children residing in the province. |
