Little Brook, NS – August 19, 2019: Site improvements have taken place this spring and summer at Cape Saint Mary Lighthouse Park to improve accessibility and to encourage longer stays.

A two-unit restroom facility including one accessible toilet opened at the park in late July 2019. The Municipality of Clare hired JD Composites Inc. to build the shelter housing the toilets using PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) core foam green technology. The equivalent of 26,000 recycled standard plastic bottles PET were used for the project. This long-lasting material lends itself well to outdoor applications due to its resistance to rot, mildew, insects and wind.

Additional site improvements include:

• a wheelchair-accessible cement walkway from parking lot to picnic shelter;
• general landscaping of the grounds;
• a recycling station modelled after the provincial park systems;
• wood cladding and crushed gravel around the base of Lost to the Sea memorial;
• a concrete bench.

Site improvements were funded by the Municipality of Clare and a provincial beautification program from the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage. The concrete bench was donated by Laura and Louis Maillet in memory of their son Daniel Paul Maillet, who was lost at sea in 2006.

The park was officially opened on July 5, 2018, with an unveiling of a monument dedicated to those who lost their lives at sea. The park includes a picnic shelter, interpretive panels and a viewing scope.
