Communauté francophone accueillante de Clare, in collaboration with the Government of Canada, le Réseau en immigration francophone de la Nouvelle-Écosse, Immigration francophone de la Nouvelle-Écosse and Inclusion Clare, is proud to present the first edition of les Journées multiculturelles de Clare, from June 25 to 27, 2021.

Friday, June 25

Opening of the festival - Evening online, 7 p.m.:

Join us on our Facebook page for an exchange of migratory and cultural experiences from people of diverse backgrounds who now call Clare home. Moussa Sangaré-Ponce will moderate the discussion with guests Irene Costentin, Jean-Paul Kalwahali and Sera Senghor.

About the panellists

Born in France, Irène Costentin has lived in Clare since 2013. She is a professor of French at Université Sainte-Anne.

Jean-Paul Kalwahali is the manager of the Rendez-Vous de la Baie Welcome Centre and is of Congolese origin. He studied at Université Sainte-Anne and has lived in the beautiful region of Clare since 2016.

Sera Senghor arrived in Canada from Senegal in 2005 and has resided in Clare since 2018. He is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, as well as a father of two girls and a soccer enthusiast.

Working effectively in a multicultural community, 2 p.m.:

Speaker Mukuna Lunda will give an online talk based on his experiences. Mr. Lunda is a professor at the Halifax campus of Université Sainte-Anne. He immigrated to Canada with his family more than 20 years ago.

Member of the group Wontanara

An afternoon with the group Wontanara, 3 p.m.:

The group Wontanara will hold a virtual African dance workshop, followed by a presentation of traditional instruments. Mohamed and Marielle love to share their knowledge of traditional dances, songs and rhythms from Guinea as they strongly believe that this kind of exchange helps promote and enhance artistic expression and contributes to the cultural diversity of their province.

Ndole, a traditional Cameroonian dish

Fundraiser for Inclusion Clare, 11:30 a.m.:

Have you ever heard of Ndole? Made with ndole leaves and flavoured with garlic, smoked fish, shrimp and beef, this typical Cameroonian dish is the ultimate comfort food. Marie-Virginie Nyela, a member of CFA de Clare's Inclusion and Diversity Committee, along with the social enterprise Inclusion Clare are serving up this meal for Sunday lunch.

Kora-Sanza concert, 6 p.m.: 

To celebrate Canadian Multiculturalism Day, CFA de Clare and IFNÉ invite you to participate in this virtual performance. Sadio Sissokho and Trevor Ferrier present the fusion of the kora (the harp-lute) with the sanza (the thumb piano). This presentation explores the construction, playing techniques and history of these two rare and relatively unknown ancient instruments.

Discover some fun and multicultural chalk games on the sidewalks near Clare's two elementary schools (École Stella-Maris in Meteghan and École Joseph-Dugas in Church Point).

Make your own Mancala game, one of the oldest two-player strategy games in the world. It has been played throughout Asia and Africa for over 7,000 years.
