Municipality of Clare Receives $200,000 Federal Grant Towards Revitalization of Wentworth Lake Municipal Park

Little Brook, NS – February 3, 2022: Through the federal government’s Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) and in line with the Municipality of the District of Clare’s Tourism Public Spaces Master Plan, Wentworth Lake Municipal Park will receive a $200,000 investment to improve accessibility and enhance the visitor experience. The total cost of the project is estimated at $271,154, the remainder of which will be funded by the Municipality of Clare.

“Wentworth Lake Municipal Park, although beautiful and pristine, is further inland compared to most of our municipal infrastructure,” stated Stéphane Cyr, Chief Administrative Officer for the Municipality of Clare. “We see this project as a meaningful opportunity to counter this trend and to invest in public spaces further away from the shore.”

As the region experiences a real estate surge and an increase in private sector investment, Council and staff of the Municipality of Clare have made the revitalization of its parks and outdoor areas a priority for its residents. Plans for Wentworth Lake Municipal Park include:

  • formalizing the welcome areas and trailheads;
  • the construction of new and accessible washrooms;
  • providing an opportunity for access to the lake;
  • trail resurfacing to provide greater accessibility;
  • the development of a natural play-oriented trail made of eco-friendly materials.

In addition to being green and environmentally friendly, all new construction, amenities and improvements contained in this project will be viewed through an accessibility lens so as promote greater inclusivity. Accessible washrooms, trail resurfacing and the addition of inclusive playground equipment are three tangible examples of this commitment.

“The Municipality of Clare is committed to the province’s goal of ensuring that our spaces are accessible by 2030,” noted Tori Comeau, the Municipality of Clare’s Recreation Manager and Accessibility Coordinator for Clare’s Accessibility Advisory Committee. “By keeping accessibility in mind, we ensure that Wentworth Lake Municipal Park is a safe, inclusive and fun space for all residents and visitors.”

Released in 2021, the Municipality of Clare’s Tourism Public Spaces Master Plan pinpoints a list of improvements for six sites in the region: Mavillette Beach Provincial Park, Smugglers Cove Provincial Park, Cape St. Mary Lighthouse Park, Joseph and Marie Dugas Municipal Park, Pointe à Major Cemetery and Chapel and Wentworth Lake Municipal Park. These enhancements are designed to benefit the quality of life of Clare residents while also strengthening its appeal to potential newcomers to the area.

Settled in 1768 and incorporated in 1879, the Municipality of Clare is located at the southwestern tip of Nova Scotia with approximately 8,000 residents.
